The point total right now: 41. The point total all of last season: 48. This, Avalanche fan, constitutes real progress in 2017.

On, as a certain NFL coach might say, to 2018 now.

The Avs' focus is on a brighter future, but on New Year's Eve there was a decidedly retro feel at the Pepsi Center. First off, fans did the Wave in the third period. Second, the Avs partied like it was 1999, back in the glory days when blowout victories to the good were commonplace around here.

The Avs dominated the Islanders from the opening faceoff to the final whistle, beating New York 6-1. It moved the team to 19-16-3 as the calendar turns to Game No. 39, to just seven fewer points than it took to gain in 82 games of last season.

OK, granted: Last season was one of the worst in modern NHL history. But this is still progress folks.

"It's a big difference," said Avs captain Gabe Landeskog, who scored twice.
